Historic Library Roof Restoration, Replication Historic Iron Railing, Weathervane
One of the most prominent Heritage buildings in Canada, the library was stripped to the steel framing, new steel deck, vapour barrier, insulation, plywood decking, and new 20-oz copper, lead, and Monel roofing. All the decorative cast iron railing and weathervane were restored. Monel a nickel/copper alloy sheet metal was chosen because of its workability and roll-form capability. The 66% nickel material had to be beaten out to form complex curves. About 1,390 square metres were used to replace both the galvanized iron and lead-coated copper. Heather and Little installed the sheet metal using brake-formed double-locked flat seams, soldered joints, and attachment clips and nails made from the same material. Roof structures clad include the lantern walls, upper flying buttresses and pinnacles, buttress cap flashing, main roof ribs and cornice, and lantern window exterior cladding. Another 110 square metres of 1.2-mm stainless steel were used to fabricate built-in stainless rain gutters. This project received The North American Copper in Architecture Awards
To reduce the cost of scaffolding the General Contractor decided to detach the spire
