Is It Time To Replace Your Roofing With Metal Shingles?

Metal roofing has typically been considered a very "industrial" look, so in the past, the use of metal shingles in roofing has been chiefly confined to businesses. However, recently, property owners of all types have been discovering the benefits of metal shingles, even on private homes.

Metal roofing isn't for everyone, but it has a lot to offer - particularly for property owners looking to the long term. These are just a few reasons why metal shingles are becoming more commonplace on roofs.

Five Reasons To Consider Metal Roofing

1 - Excellent long-term value

One of the biggest arguments against metal roofing is that it is significantly more expensive than traditional roofing tiles. However, these arguments overlook one critical point: metal roofs last far longer than most other options, such as asphalt tiles. While traditional tiles will only last around 20 years before needing major renovation, a metal roof can easily last 50 years. Century-old metal roofs aren't unheard of.

So, higher up-front costs prevent expensive (and disruptive) roof replacement jobs.

2 - Better energy efficiency

Metal is one of the best materials for insulating a roof, and that matters a lot as energy costs continue to rise. Estimates are that a metal roof can save 20% in energy costs compared to traditional roofing tiles.

3 - Better sustainability

The materials used in metal shingles - commonly aluminum, steel, or even copper - are all endlessly recyclable. Your new metal roof would be made mostly or entirely from recycled materials.  This is good for the planet and, combined with the high energy efficiency of metal, makes it one of the most eco-friendly roofing options.

4 - Metal is better for low-sloped roofs

Roofs can come in a variety of slopes, but if the slope is particularly low (3:12 and below) it can have issues with drainage and keeping debris off of the roof - especially with traditional asphalt tiles. Metal is much better in these situations since it has lower friction and is less likely to 'trap' water or objects on the surface.

5 - Metal can look great

Just because you have a metal roof, that doesn't mean your home or office has to look like a factory. Numerous paints have been developed that adhere well to metal, and there are numerous ways of giving the metal itself an attractive finish. Metal can blend seamlessly with various building styles; even 'rustic' look like wood and stone.

Also, should you consider solar panels for your roof, metal is excellent because they tend to blend in with the surrounding materials. So, the solar panels are less prominent when viewed from below, increasing your curb appeal.
