Manitoba Legislative Building, Winnipeg, MB

Originally named the Manitoba Parliament building, this beautiful Neoclassical building, which stands 253 feet tall, and was completed in 1920. This structure is most recognizable for its “Golden Boy” statue, which sits atop of its cupola.

After more than 80 years it was time to replace the copper roof, which had been repaired several times over its lifetime. A complete roof replacement was required to protect this historic building as close examination revealed there were many issues with the roof, including leaks, loose copper sheeting, rotting wood deck, and exposed nails.

Heather & Little’s Historic Roofing Work

Heather & Little was contracted to perform restoration work on the Manitoba Legislative Building along with Dillon Consulting and Alpha Masonry Contractors of Manitoba, as well as Spencer Higgins Architects of Toronto. Our team removed all of the existing copper roofing, decorative copper panels, metal cupola and replaced these pieces with brand new copper ornaments that matched the original design.

During the restoration process, the deteriorated wood substructures were repaired, and new roof decking and vapour barrier were installed. The brand new copper roofing system was then put in place, made of 24 and 20 ounce copper sheet metal. Sheet lead was also installed to cover many of the exposed masonry ledges to protect and prevent future erosion of the historical stonework.

Heather & Little is proud to have been part of the rejuvenation of this historic architectural gem. For more information on this project, browse the images below, or contact a member of our team today!
